A recent study for birth control pills showed that obese women obtain the same effect in preventing them from pregnancy as of a thin and normal sized woman.

The previous studies regarding to birth control pills, suggested that the pill will not work properly in an obese woman, however, a new study shows that no matter the size of a woman, she will obtain same protection as well of a normal one.

Dr. Carolyn L. Westhoff of Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, together with her colleagues discovers that s the size of women, whether she is heavy or thin is not a hindrance from obtaining the protection offer by the pills, the mere fact that she intake pills constantly, it will prevent them from getting pregnant.

According to previousr study, they have found out that women obtained 30 to 40 percent of pregnancy risk during their pill intake than of those who had a normal weight. They reason out that an extra weight can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptives. In an overall rate of the contraception’s failure had a figure of between two to eight percent every year.

Westhoff together with her colleagues gathered 226 women to take a part of the experimentation; they consist of normal-weight women and obese-women.

They undergo three to four sequences of oral contraceptives; every woman undergoes series of blood tests and ultrasounds to verify whether their ovaries were producing eggs.

In order to recognize if the women are taking up their pills regularly, they tested their blood levels. About 90 percent of normal-weight women’s hormone levels indicate that their hormone levels showed that they used the pill consistently, however, only 72 percent of obese indicates their consistency.

On the record 97 percent of the 150 consistent users did not ovulate, disregarding the weight a woman had.

The study takes its place as Westhoff’s team consulted for some drug firms; makers of oral contraceptives such as Bayer,Schering-Plough, and Duramed.
