Whirlpool Issues Maytag Dishwasher recall
Whirlpool Corporation’s Maytag unit is revoking about 1.7 million dishwashers because it is believed to be fire hazardous.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall Thursday saying that the company, Whirlpool Corporation, has acknowledged 12 reports of electrical malfunction in the dishwasher heating element that led to fires and destruction.
The agency said that one kitchen fire caused widespread damage, luckily, there were no signs of injuries and nobody got hurt.
The recall comprises of Crosley brand dishwashers with plastic tubs, Performa by Maytag, Magic Chef, Admiral, Jenn-Air, Amana, and Maytag.
The recalled dishwashers were made out of silver, white, bisque, and black and the front panels with stainless steel. These appliances were sold at department stores all over the country from February 2006 to April 2010. The price ranges from $250 to $900.
The CPSC gave an advice to customers to directly prevent the use of the recalled dishwashers and cut off the electrical supply by shutting down the fuse or the circuit breaker that controls it.
A free in-home repair can be appointed by customers or obtain a refund of $150 or $250 in the direction of purchase of selected dishwashers by Maytag. However, the amount of refund depends on the amount and type of the model bought.
Whirlpool needed $75 million to cover up the costs of the recall, according to the company’s spokeswoman. More information in the number of serial numbers riveted in the recall can be located at the website of the company or the CPSC website.
This recent recall of Maytag is the second recall for a year involving million chief appliances. Back in March 2009, the company recalled about 1.6 refrigerators due to fire risks. Whirlpool, which was situated in Benton Harbor, Michigan, purchased Maytag last March 2006 in a $1.8 billion contract.
