Sharks Can’t Differentiate Colors

According to a recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Western Australia, it is known that sharks can not distinguish colors. Color blind on this shark could bring benefits for swimmers, surfers, and even the shark itself. The results of this study refute the belief that state shark attracted to the color yellow.

Joint research conducted by scientists from universities in Queensland and Western Australia states that the problem of contrast is important, not about color. They say that more research is needed but advisable to avoid wearing brightly colored costumes when swimming. Suspected shark mostly interested in yellow on the basis of tests conducted by the U.S. Navy.

Using a technique called Micro-spectrophotometry, a group of researchers looked into retinal cells belong to 17 species of sharks in the waters of Queensland and Western Australia.  In all 17 species, the researchers found, light-receiving cells most commonly used is ‘rod cells’ which are very sensitive to light and allows the shark to see in the dark. However, with cells that sharks can not distinguish colors.

In addition, the sharks did not have enough cell capable of responding directly to light at specific wavelengths. As an illustration, the human eye, various kinds of cone cells are available to distinguish colors that caught the eye.

In 10 of 17 shark species studied, there is no cone cells are found. Only 7 species of shark that have cone cells, unfortunately it is only a single type, which is only sensitive to wavelengths of about 530 nanometers, which is the wavelength for green color.

“They only have one type of photoreceptor in their eyes, which are used by humans to see color, which we have three, namely red, green and blue,” said Nathan Hart, a professor from the University of Western Australia.
