Mexican woman crowned as the new Miss Universe
Jimena Navarrete, a 22-year-old woman from Mexico was crowned as the new Miss Universe in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, on Monday, which extends the domination of Latin Americans in the pageant for three straight years.
Miss Jamaica, Yendi Phillipps came in as first runner up, while Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell was second. Anna Polavska of Ukraine came in next place and Ms. Philippines Venus Raj came in to the fourth.
A nature advocate from Guadalajara, Navaratte exposed in the earlier parts of the contest that she wanted to help women having eating disorder.
She was the second Mexican to take home the crown; the first one is Lupita Jones back in 1991. Meanwhile, Venezuela, who won the pageant in the past two years, has surprisingly did not make it to the first cut, when out of 83 contestants, only 15 will be chosen.
Furthermore, Miss USA Rima Fakih was also eliminated in the earlier part of the selection. From the beginning, the contest was a close fight among Mexico, Jamaica and the Philippines, whom was the tock pick in the swimsuit and evening gown competitions. However, Miss Philippines failed to deliver a strong answer during the question and answer portion. She failed to details her biggest mistake and what will she do to fix it.
Meanwhile, Miss Jamaica has been strongly-willed for event organizers, and she opposes to the death penalty, saying God is the only one who can claim our lives.
On the other hand, Miss Mexico, accompanied by an interpreter has no problems answering the question bestowed to her about the risks of Internet among children.
In its 59th year, Miss Universe 2010 was hosted by rock artist Bret Michaels and TV personality Natalie Morales. The event has taken place at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada.
