Study says nipping water prior meals helps dieting
A US study says that consuming water before eating meals helps people who want to become slim by dieting.
A Scientist from Virginia learned that an individual can actually lose up to five pounds off their weight by simply adding two glasses of water before meals to their diet. Water can make people feel full without gulping on calories, but researcher added that there is also a risk if they drink too much water.
The study uses 48 respondents of middle-aged adult with ages of 55-75 divided into two groups. The first group consumed a low-calorie diet, whereas the other group went on with the same diet but with additional two glasses of water before eating.
The study revealed that those who drank water before eating lose an average of 11-15.5 lbs. This is because drinking water before meals for middle to old age women lessens their appetite and cut down calorie intake for up to 75 to 90.
The research was presented at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston.
Brenda Davy from Virginia Tech is the senior author of the study, who also claims that their study was the first to use water consumption and dieting as variables.
Researcher states that water loads the stomach with liquid that has no calorie. This is why she suggests that people who want to manage their weight must drink two glasses of water before eating meals and refrain from drinking high caloric and sweetened drinks.
Reducing calorie intake and consuming diet drinks and other artificially sweetened drinks also help in dieting, the researcher also added. Dr. Davy also suggests that to lose weight people must avoid drinks that are sweetened with sugar.
The Institute for Public Health and Water Research, a charity, funded the research.
